‘Bright future’ ahead as Guyana, China mark 50 years of diplomatic ties.

As Guyana and China commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties later this month, Chinese Ambassador Guo Haiyan underscored that there is a bright future ahead for this relationship.
“I believe there is a bright future for China/Guyana relations because first of all, there are favourable conditions,” the Chinese diplomat told reporters on Monday (20th June) at the Chinese embassy in Georgetown.
The countries, Ambassador Haiyan noted, share a common philosophy of people-centred development, common goals and common interests
She added, “China and Guyana (are) both developing countries… both countries are standing at an important stage of development and are facing broad prospects.”
On June 27, Guyana and China commemorated 50 years of diplomatic relations. In 1972, Guyana was the first country in the English-speaking Caribbean to establish diplomatic ties with China.
Through these ties, Guyana has benefitted from support in healthcare, human resources and big infrastructure projects. Trade and economic development has been a key part of the bilateral ties too, with trade increasing by 213 percent over the past five years.
And Ambassador Haiyan committed the country’s assistance in some of Guyana’s developmental priorities: infrastructure, digital transformation, energy and electricity.
“We will continue to encourage Chinese companies and financial institutions to participate in Guyana,” the Ambassador highlighted too. To commemorate the golden jubilee, the Chinese embassy
in Guyana launched an online photo exhibition which illustrates notable achievements over the past 50 years. It includes government visits, major projects done and generally, contributions of the Chinese in Guyana. Earlier this year, as part of the celebrations for this jubilee also, China and Guyana signed an agreement that will see China investing between US$10 to US$12 million to construct a China/Guyana Friendship Park at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara.
This means that the popular Joe Vieria Park will soon be transformed into a modern recreation space.
